Walnutport Bolsters Police Force with New Part-Time Officer

Walnutport Bolsters Police Force with New Part-Time Officer

Walnutport is taking steps to strengthen its police department with the addition of a part-time officer. The move comes on the heels of a borough council vote that approved hiring Matthew Hutchins for the position.

Building on Momentum

This decision follows a series of actions taken by the council last month. In June, they approved a new four-year contract for full-time police officers, including salary increases. Additionally, they raised the hourly rate for part-time officers from $20 to $22, making Walnutport more competitive in attracting qualified candidates.

A Growing Department

Chief Pete Wayda expressed his satisfaction with the recent developments. “The department is doing a fantastic job with scheduling,” he said, highlighting the benefits of having additional officers. Currently, the department consists of four full-time officers, including Chief Wayda himself, and with the addition of Officer Hutchins, there are now four part-time officers as well.

Looking Ahead

While Walnutport welcomes Officer Hutchins, the council isn’t stopping there. They also voted to advertise for a new full-time police officer position, indicating their commitment to further expanding the force. Chief Wayda is scheduled to retire in March of 2025, and this new hire might be part of a succession plan to ensure continued department strength.

Building a Safe Community

The addition of Officer Hutchins and the planned recruitment for a full-time position demonstrate Walnutport’s dedication to public safety. By bolstering their police force, they aim to create an even safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
